The Petrel

The Petrel started with a plan to use Burled Spanish Cedar on the deck. I was going to stain the boat and chose the blandest Western Red Cedar I could find. Small accent stripes of Alaskan Yellow Cedar were used to define the lines on the boat. There were many challenges with this build, one of which was the application of the stain to a selected portion of the boat. There was extensive use of Carbon Fiber on the interior and around the cockpit. Kevlar tape was used to reinforce the hull to deck seam. A retractable skeg was constructed from a sketch that Nick Schade, the kayak's designer, was kind enough to share with me. I threw every trick I could think of at this boat. It was and is a representation of what you can do with a kit boat and some imagination.

Hull completed

Stain and fiberglass has been applied to the hull

Stripping the deck

Cockpit recess being fitted. This was one of the toughest parts of the build to get right

A preview of what the Burled Cedar will look like under glass
Carbon Fiber cloth for the interior. This will add lots of rigidity to the hull.

Forming the coaming riser, strip by strip. Also used the burled Cedar for this as well

Skeg box, gets the carbon fiber treatment later

The beginning of the coaming ring. Took two attempts to get this right

Coaming Ring installed and fiberglassed. The strip design runs through the  coaming too

Hull and deck are joined
Final epoxy coats are finished, time for a lot of sanding.

So for the results.....I never imagined that this boat would get so much attention. More attention than I am comfortable with at times. The performance is unbelievable, so good in fact, I am building another one for myself.

Rigged and ready for a splash

Time to work it out.

  2. Chris, Thanks for the compliment. Truth be told, anyone can do this with one important component. DESIRE. This boat is part of our demo fleet. It get used quite regularly. Stay tuned, A new Petrel is under construction and will be documented thoroughly over the next few months.

  4. Paul, sorry for the slow response. Been busy paddling and building, the blog had to take a back seat for a while. Yes it is the Demo boat that CLC brings out on tour. If you can catch us out on a demo, you can paddle it for yourself. Thanks for stopping by, got plenty of material for upcoming posts. Stay tuned.
